As the 19th century progressed, and visitors to the region increased, guide books proliferated. The earliest were not illustrated, but later ones pictured scenic attractions, hotels and interiors, railroads, and annual events such as the coaching parades. They provide valuable information on the growth of the Grand Hotels and illustrate dozens on the smaller hotels in the region. Some of these engravings were used over a period of years and by more than one publisher. Others seem to have used only once, or for a short period of time and include details not available elsewhere. In most cases, the artists who created the engravings are not identified.
